    Hi Robyn,

Thanks for the comment and for the distinction. Yes, I think valuation is a more apt description of what I'm talking about than is evaluation - particularly given the more typical definition of evaluation that you reference. More is coming!!

    Hi Blaine
I'm intrigued by the distinctions you've made with these competencies. Eager to read the 4th & 5th. What I noticed in Discernment was a link to conversations that have taken place on the Appreciative Inquiry listserv over the past few years about evaluation. I'm wondering if "valuation" is more along the lines of what you are suggesting with "evaluation." So often I find myself in a more rigid construct with evaluation - having to rate or label something, compare or contrast to someone or some other object. With valuation we appreciate what works, what gives life. In this context might one be more inclined to appreciate what is happening? Would this change in semantics create a different possibility of adding value? Would valuation support looking for and seeing, recognizing, affirming the action or behavior? Would there be a shift in our awareness that leads to new possibility? Curious about your thoughts. Keep going, I want more!
